Hans-Joachim Roedelius
Hans-Joachim Roedelius
Hans-Joachim Roedelius (born 26 October 1934 in Berlin) is a German experimental, ambient and electronic musician. He is best known as a co-founder of the krautrock groups Kluster (with Dieter Moebius, Konrad Schnitzler) later the more succesful and notable Cluster (HJR* and Dieter Moebius), Harmonia (HJR, Dieter Moebius and Michael Rother), Qluster (HJR and Onnen Bock) and for his work in the ambient jazz trio Aquarello. He’s had numerous, if not countless collaborations with too many names to mention here, over 100 releases with his name, though his most notable are perhaps with Tim Story, Christopher James Chaplin, Stefan Schneider and last but not least Brian Eno. His first attempts at music are documented under the moniker ‘Human Being.’

HJR was a UFA child actor, refugee, nurse and palliative caregiver, detective, butler, chauffeur and masseur. His life’s path led him through both Germanys to Corsica but he always remained in contact with the world of music. When that world made sparks in West Germany in the late 1960s with the visual arts between Fluxus and expansion of consciousness, Roedelius was part of it with his bands Cluster and Harmonia. They soon were considered outstanding representatives of West German progressive rock, which British journalists tenderly dubbed “Krautrock.” Roedelius’s contributions, however, were neither martial nor overly intellectual; Zen garden-like soundscapes became his trademark, mostly created on the piano and synthesizer. Since then he has tirelessly produced solo works as well as collaborations in addition to installations, sound sculptures, film and stage music. He lives and works tirelessly in Baden near Vienna and regularly returns to Corsica.

At the age of 82, Achim as his friends call him, continues on with his work leaning away from the abstract and electronic and more into the vignettes of semi-classical piano scapes though not abandoning his melodic and whimsical phrasing that made Cluster, Harmonia and collaborations with so many others famous. As a family man he is husband, grandpa and father. He still puts on his infamous ’More Ohr Less’ festival every year in Austria that has spotlighted artists from every corner of the world.

trusted authorities in the past; namely RK Faulhaber, Lux Vibratus (Chrome), Dave Jones (Sturgeon Hoof), Elisa Faires, Larry Thrasher, Todd Mellors(Saifir), M.S. Waldron along with the video expertise of Jason Scott Furr. The crew has been seen if not heard sonically feeding the beast known as
X A M B U C A.

X A M B U C A is not limited to any particular style or category of music and would like to establish that
it not be limited to the confines of musical categorization...experimental you say? Well we've experimented and know the possibility of most usable sonic results. So has the rest of mankind now that we together shall embark upon the recurring footprints of human unoriginality.
